Martin Brundle raced twelve seasons in Formula 1 without winning a race, and he spent his best year alongside Michael Schumacher. A Briton born in 1959, he made his debut in 1984 with Tyrrell, and that first year does not count for him: the team was excluded from the championship over a technical irregularity and all its results were wiped.
For years he moved from small team to small team: Zakspeed, one race with Williams, Brabham. His chance came in 1992 with Benetton, as team-mate to a Schumacher running his first full season. Brundle stood on the podium five times, was sixth in the championship with 38 points, and even so Benetton did not keep him.
He kept fighting with whatever he had. With Ligier he was third at Imola in 1993, and in 1994, with McLaren, he was second at Monaco, his best result. His last podium came in Belgium in 1995, with Ligier again, and he signed off in 1996 with Jordan.
Nine podiums and no wins. To many people he is better known as a television commentator than as a driver, and his walks along the grid before the start have become a broadcasting classic.
What if Brundle had another car?
We took his real attributes and put him in the best car of each era: in a real driver's seat, against the team-mate that car actually had. 30 full seasons in each.

The first number is always Brundle's. A team-mate is whoever started the same race for the same team. "In the race" only counts races both finished, because a retirement says nothing about who was quicker. "On the grid" is the starting position, with penalties already applied.
