Stefano Modena arrived in Formula 1 as 1987 Formula 3000 champion and with a reputation as a special talent. An Italian born in 1963, he made his debut with Brabham at the end of that year, spent 1988 at EuroBrun and returned to Brabham in 1989, where he was on the podium at Monaco, third.

His best season was 1991 with Tyrrell. He was fourth in the first race, in Phoenix; at Monaco he started second, alongside Ayrton Senna, and his engine blew; and in Canada he finished second. He scored 10 points and was eighth in the championship.

In 1992 he moved to Jordan and it was a hard year: he scored just one point, in the final race in Adelaide. He never returned to Formula 1 and carried on in touring cars. He stopped at 70 Grands Prix, 17 points and two podiums.

The first number is always Modena's. A team-mate is whoever started the same race for the same team. "In the race" only counts races both finished, because a retirement says nothing about who was quicker. "On the grid" is the starting position, with penalties already applied.
