Adrian Sutil raced seven seasons in Formula 1 and never stood on the podium, although once he had it in his hands. A German born in 1983, he made his debut in 2007 with Spyker, a team that could fight for nothing, and in 2008 stayed with the same outfit, by then turned into Force India.

That season left his most remembered race. At Monaco, in the rain, he was fourth in a Force India that usually ran at the back, a few laps from the end, when Kimi Räikkönen hit him from behind. He retired, and those points would have been Force India's only ones all year.

With the team settled came his best years: eleventh in the championship in 2010 with 47 points and ninth in 2011 with 42, his best position. He was left without a seat for 2012, came back with Force India in 2013 and signed off in 2014 with Sauber, in a season without points.

Seven seasons, more than a hundred races and no podiums. He is one of the drivers who best explains what it is to spend a whole career in the middle of the grid.

What if Sutil had another car?

We took his real attributes and put him in the best car of each era: in a real driver's seat, against the team-mate that car actually had. 30 full seasons in each.

The first number is always Sutil's. A team-mate is whoever started the same race for the same team. "In the race" only counts races both finished, because a retirement says nothing about who was quicker. "On the grid" is the starting position, with penalties already applied.
