Esteban Gutiérrez arrived in Formula 1 as GP3 champion and as Mexico's next-generation hope. Born in Monterrey in 1991, he made his debut with Sauber in 2013 alongside Nico Hülkenberg, and in his fifth race, in Barcelona, he set the fastest lap, something few rookies manage.
Points took longer. They came in Japan, with a seventh place that gave him his only six points in Formula 1. In 2014 the Sauber did not score a single point all year, and neither did Gutiérrez; in Bahrain he ended upside down after contact with Pastor Maldonado.
He spent 2015 as Ferrari reserve and returned in 2016 with Haas, the new team on the grid, alongside Romain Grosjean. Grosjean scored in his first race; Gutiérrez finished just outside the points five times, eleventh, and ended the year with nothing. He never raced in Formula 1 again: 59 Grands Prix and 6 points.

| Year | Team-mate | In the race | On the grid |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2013 | Nico HülkenbergSauber · 19 races | 2-12 | 1-18 |
| 2014 | Adrian SutilSauber · 19 races | 4-4 | 7-12 |
| 2016 | Romain GrosjeanHaas F1 Team · 21 races | 7-6 | 9-12 |
The first number is always Gutiérrez's. A team-mate is whoever started the same race for the same team. "In the race" only counts races both finished, because a retirement says nothing about who was quicker. "On the grid" is the starting position, with penalties already applied.
