Ralf Schumacher won six Grands Prix and took six poles across eleven seasons, numbers that in any other context would have built an unarguably respected career. The context was his older brother, who over those same years was winning five straight titles, and against that comparison no argument holds.
His best spell was the Williams years with BMW power, between 2000 and 2004. In 2001 he won three races and finished fourth in the championship, in a car that was very quick in a straight line and short on reliability, and he led home the first brothers' one-two in history in Canada. Passes between the two became recurring television material.
He moved to Toyota in 2005 looking to be the reference point of a team of his own, and found the same problem as Jarno Trulli, his team-mate: the best funded project on the grid never turned that money into wins. He retired in 2007 without winning again, with the permanent sense of a career always judged by comparison.
