Derek Warwick raced eleven seasons in Formula 1, nearly always in the wrong car. A Briton born in 1954, he started with Toleman in 1981 and in 1984 got his big chance: Renault, a works team. It was his best year, second in Belgium and in Britain, 23 points and seventh in the championship.

Renault went downhill and he stayed, and at the end of 1985 the team pulled out of Formula 1. He came back halfway through 1986 with Brabham, to take the seat of Elio de Angelis, who had died in testing. Then came three seasons with Arrows, the best in 1988 with 17 points but no podium, and one with Lotus in 1990.

Outside Formula 1 he won what he never did inside it: in 1992 he was world sportscar champion and won the 24 Hours of Le Mans with Peugeot. He still came back in 1993 with Footwork. He retired with 147 Grands Prix, 71 points and four podiums, never a winner.

The first number is always Warwick's. A team-mate is whoever started the same race for the same team. "In the race" only counts races both finished, because a retirement says nothing about who was quicker. "On the grid" is the starting position, with penalties already applied.
