Kimi Antonelli is Formula 1 world champion at 20 years and 68 days. He sealed it on Sunday in Mexico City, with four races still to go, and takes from Sebastian Vettel a record he had held since 2010 by a little over three years.
More than three years ahead of anyone
Vettel became champion in Abu Dhabi in 2010 at 23 years and 134 days, and nobody had come close since. Hamilton fell 166 days short of that mark in 2008, and Alonso and Verstappen were both around it at 24. Antonelli lowers it by 3 years and 66 days, a gap nobody else on this list has: everyone from second to seventh fits inside less than three years.
| Driver | Age when the title was sealed | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Kimi Antonelli | 20 years, 68 days | Mexico City 2026 |
| Sebastian Vettel | 23 years, 134 days | Abu Dhabi 2010 |
| Lewis Hamilton | 23 years, 300 days | Brazil 2008 |
| Fernando Alonso | 24 years, 58 days | Brazil 2005 |
| Max Verstappen | 24 years, 73 days | Abu Dhabi 2021 |
| Emerson Fittipaldi | 25 years, 273 days | Italy 1972 |
| Michael Schumacher | 25 years, 314 days | Australia 1994 |
The age counts the day the title was decided, not the end of the season. That is why Alonso appears at 24 years and 58 days: he sealed it in Brazil in 2005 with two races still to run.
What the simulator said
Before Austin, our numbers gave him the title in a thousand seasons out of a thousand, but only sealed it there in three, as we explained in what he needed to become champion in Austin. He won in Austin and, with that win, 98.8% of the simulations moved to sealing it in Mexico City (the numbers before Mexico City). In the Grand Prix preview, starting fourth, the model gave him 19.5% of the wins and 98% of finishing in the top ten, which was all he needed.
