Jaime Alguersuari was for six years the youngest driver ever to start a Grand Prix. Born in Barcelona in 1990, he was promoted by Toro Rosso halfway through 2009 in place of Sébastien Bourdais, and made his debut in Hungary aged 19 years and 125 days, with almost no prior mileage in a Formula 1 car. The record stood until Max Verstappen came along.

His first half-season was that of a rookie dropped in at the deep end: no points in eight races. In 2010 he scored 5, and 2011 was his best season: 26 points and fourteenth in the championship, with two seventh places, in Italy and in Korea. In Canada he started from the back and finished eighth, and at Monza he climbed from eighteenth on the grid.

That year he beat his team-mate Sébastien Buemi, and it did him no good. In December 2011 Red Bull dropped both to make way for Ricciardo and Vergne. Alguersuari became a Pirelli test driver, raced one season of Formula E and retired in 2015, aged 25. In Formula 1 he stopped at 46 Grands Prix and 31 points.

What would Jaime Alguersuari have achieved with a different car or in a different era?

His team-mates

1 team-mate across 3 seasons. When both finished the race, Alguersuari was ahead in 12 of 24; on the grid he started ahead in 16 of 46.

The first number is always Alguersuari's. A team-mate is whoever started the same race for the same team. "In the race" only counts races both finished, because a retirement says nothing about who was quicker. "On the grid" is the starting position, with penalties already applied.
