Érik Comas came into Formula 1 as 1990 Formula 3000 champion, and he is remembered mostly for two afternoons that brought him close to Ayrton Senna. A Frenchman born in 1963, he spent two years with Ligier, and his best season was 1992: fifth in France and sixth in Canada and Germany.
That same year, in practice at Spa, he crashed at high speed and was left unconscious in the car with the engine running. Senna was first on the scene: he stopped his McLaren, ran to him and switched off the engine while the medics arrived.
In 1993 and 1994 he drove for Larrousse, at the back of the grid, and added 3 more points. At Imola in 1994, with the race stopped after Senna's crash, he left the pits without knowing what had happened and had to stop beside the scene. At the end of that year he left Formula 1. In Japan he was twice GT champion. In Formula 1, 59 Grands Prix and 7 points.

The first number is always Comas's. A team-mate is whoever started the same race for the same team. "In the race" only counts races both finished, because a retirement says nothing about who was quicker. "On the grid" is the starting position, with penalties already applied.
