Christian Klien was there at the start of Red Bull in Formula 1. An Austrian born in 1983, he made his debut in 2004 with Jaguar alongside Mark Webber, and scored his first points in Belgium, sixth from thirteenth on the grid. The following year Jaguar became Red Bull, and Klien stayed on.

2005 was his best year, though he did not race all of it: the team split the second car between him and Vitantonio Liuzzi, and Klien missed four races. He came back with David Coulthard as team-mate and scored 9 points, with fifth place in China, the best result of his career.

In 2006 the car got worse, he scored just 2 points and Red Bull replaced him with Robert Doornbos for the last three races. He spent years as a test driver (Honda, McLaren, BMW Sauber) and in 2010 raced three more times with HRT. In all, 49 Grands Prix and 14 points.

What would Christian Klien have achieved with a different car or in a different era?

His team-mates

3 team-mates across 4 seasons. When both finished the race, Klien was ahead in 6 of 26; on the grid he started ahead in 19 of 51.

The first number is always Klien's. A team-mate is whoever started the same race for the same team. "In the race" only counts races both finished, because a retirement says nothing about who was quicker. "On the grid" is the starting position, with penalties already applied.
