What age is a Formula 1 driver at their best? The curve and its trap

Every time a veteran signs for another year, the same argument starts: is he finished, or is he at his peak? We measured fifteen hundred complete careers and plotted performance against age. The chart says, with no ambiguity at all, that drivers keep improving past thirty-five. And that chart is a trap. Here is why.
What the raw numbers say
We took the Formula 1 seasons from 1,500 complete simulated careers and grouped them by the driver’s age. For each age: how many seasons are in the sample, the average championship position, and wins per season.

Read quickly, the message is devastating: at 20 you finish seventeenth, at 36 you finish sixth. Wins per season multiply by twenty-five. A 36-year-old looks nearly four times better than a 22-year-old.
The trap is in the second column
Look at the sample sizes. At 28 there are 1,180 seasons. At 30 there are only 311 left. At 36, 130. Between 28 and 30, 74% of the grid evaporates.
That is not drivers getting better: it is the bad ones disappearing. If you are still in Formula 1 at 34, it is not because you had birthdays — it is because for a decade you were good enough that somebody kept putting you in a car. The sample at 36 is not “drivers at 36”, it is “drivers still racing at 36”, which is a rather exclusive club.
It is the same mistake as saying university graduates earn more without asking who goes to university. Statisticians call it survivorship bias, and in Formula 1 it is especially brutal because the filter runs every single year and does not forgive.
So when is a driver at their best?
Within a single career, the peak arrives much earlier than the table suggests. In our model each driver has their own peak age, spread between 27 and 35, and from there a decline begins that accelerates after 37. What the table shows is a mixture of two things — every driver declining, and the worst ones leaving — and the second effect is far larger than the first.
The decline does show up in the last row: at 38 the average position slips from 6.4 to 7.9 and wins drop from 0.78 to 0.55 — and that happens with an already heavily filtered sample. When the decline is visible even among the survivors, it is real.
The three clocks of a career
The same dataset gives three dates that frame any driver’s career:
- Debut at 20 on average.
- First win at 25.5 — but only 38% ever get one. Most careers end without a single victory.
- First championship at 27.5, and here the filter is what it is: 11% manage it.
Five and a half years pass between debut and first win. That is far longer than the wonderkid narrative suggests, and it matches what you see on the real grid: almost nobody wins in their first season, and whoever does is there because they were handed a car that was already winning.
What to do with this
If you follow Formula 1: distrust age curves — yours and everybody else’s. Almost all the ones in circulation have this same bias baked in, and none of them mention it.

Method note: these are 1,500 careers of a model calibrated against real Formula 1 results since 1988, not 1,500 real careers. The shape of the curve and the bias transfer; the decimals do not.
