Talent or car? We simulated 2,000 driver careers to find out

Every fan knows the answer until you ask for a number. Does an exceptional driver in an average car still become champion? Does winning Formula 3 and Formula 2 mean anything, or is the paddock full of junior champions who never won a thing? We simulated two thousand full careers, from a twelve-year-old in a kart to retirement, and measured them. Part of the result is uncomfortable.

What was actually simulated

Each of the 2,000 careers starts with a twelve-year-old and a kart, and ends when they retire. In between: karting, F4, F3 and F2, with limited seats you have to win against the rest of your generation, and then as many Formula 1 seasons as talent and the market allow. 1,995 of the 2,000 went on to race at least one Formula 1 season — that it is nearly 100% is a design decision of the game mode, not a claim about the real world, and it is worth saying before going any further.

The engine is the same one the rest of the site uses: weighted formulas over driver attributes, car, weather, reliability and strategy, with its parameters calibrated against real Formula 1 results since 1988. There is no machine learning involved; there is a calibrated model, which is far more boring and far more checkable. First finding: the typical career is fairly bleak

Before the cross-tabs, the overall picture. A driver who reaches Formula 1 races 8.5 seasons on average, wins 1.4 races and retires at 31.5. That is the mean, and the mean lies: what really describes Formula 1 are the extremes.

66.5% never win a single Grand Prix in their entire career. 89.2% never win a championship. At the other end, 1.7% pile up six or more titles. That is exactly the shape real Formula 1 has: a very long list of names who raced and a very short list of names who won.

Second finding: winning in the junior ladder predicts far less than you would think

We expected a strong relationship here and there isn’t one. The correlation between junior titles and Formula 1 championships is 0.064: essentially zero.

There is signal: winning junior titles more than triples your odds (from 5.3% to 18.7%). But look at the other side of it — four out of five junior champions never win a world title, and sweeping the ladder with three titles or more barely improves on winning one or two. That missing jump is the first clue that the variable which matters is somewhere else.

Third finding: the car does not influence the outcome, it decides it

We cross-referenced every career with the average position its car held on the grid. The correlation is −0.461 (negative because position 1 is the best car): by far the strongest relationship in the whole study. But the number that really settles the argument is this one.

Two hundred and five drivers never sat in a top-three car. Among those two hundred and five: zero championships and zero wins. Not one. However good the driver, however many junior titles they brought with them, however many seasons they lasted.

And the reverse: of those who at some point sat in the best car on the grid, almost two in three ended up world champion. Between those two groups there is no difference of degree, there is a chasm. Talent decides who joins the conversation; the car decides who wins it.

What this means if you follow Formula 1

That the pub argument about whether so-and-so would have won in another car is not rhetorical: on these numbers, it is the only argument that matters. That a driver without a single title may have been better than three champions with no way of proving it. And that when a young driver signs for a small team “to make a name for himself”, he is accepting a bet with the odds you have just read.

It also explains why we score careers on two axes rather than one. Counting titles alone is counting cars. That is why, in our driver career mode, every season is weighted by the machinery you had: winning with the fourth-best car on the grid is not worth the same as winning with the first. And if you want to play it the other way round — take a driver and see what they would have done in another car — that is what the what-if mode is for.

The limits of this

These are 2,000 careers of a model, not 2,000 real ones. The model is calibrated against Formula 1 results since 1988 and reproduces the distribution of wins and titles reasonably well, but it is still a model: it knows nothing about internal politics, sponsors, injuries, or why a team decides to write off a season developing next year’s car. What holds is the relative conclusion — the weight of the car against the weight of a junior record — not the decimal.

This study complements what we measured in how much the car matters in Formula 1, where we put five champions in the worst car of their own season. That experiment measured the ceiling; this one measures the whole career.
