What is the most dominant car in F1 history? 37 seasons measured with the same driver

Comparing cars across eras is a mess. The 1988 McLaren MP4/4 won fifteen of sixteen races, but that grid was a different world. The 2023 Red Bull won twenty-one of twenty-two, with twenty modern cars behind it. Which was more superior to its own time? Raw numbers cannot say, because each raced against different rivals.

There is a way to settle it, and it is the one we used: remove the one thing that contaminates the comparison — the driver.

The trick: the same driver in all 37 cars

We invented a driver. Every attribute at 80 out of 100: competent, professional, nothing remarkable. Neither Senna nor a rookie. And we sat him in the best car of every season from 1988 to 2025, racing against that year's real grid.

Because the driver never changes, anything that moves in the result comes from the car. That puts thirty-seven seasons on one scale, which is exactly what a trophy cabinet cannot do. Sixty full-season simulations per year.

One detail that matters: when we insert our car we remove the original team from the grid so it is not duplicated. Otherwise the best car of the year would run in triplicate and our driver would be racing copies of himself. It is an easy mistake to make and it ruins the whole measurement.

First, check the method works

Before trusting anything, we checked the output against seasons whose endings we know by heart. If the method cannot reproduce what already happened, it is worthless.

It held up: the 2023 Red Bull wins 90% of races in simulation and won 95% in reality. The 2004 Ferrari, 80% simulated against 83% real. The 1988 McLaren, 79% against 94%. And 2021, with the Red Bull and the Mercedes separated by a single rating point, lands on 50% of wins and 60% of titles: a coin-flip championship, which is precisely what it was until the last lap in Abu Dhabi.

The ranking

The winner is the 2023 Red Bull RB19, and not narrowly. With an unremarkable driver it would win nine races in ten and the championship in 100% of simulated seasons. Its advantage over the second-best car that year was twenty-seven points out of a hundred, the largest in the whole series: it did not have a rival, it had a category of its own.

Behind it, the 2014 Mercedes W05, the car that opened the hybrid era with an engine the rest took years to match. Third and fourth are the two machines usually named as the most dominant ever: the Ferrari F2004 and the 1988 McLaren MP4/4. That they land there, measured by a yardstick that knows nothing of their legend, says a good deal.

Look at the titles column: seven of the top ten deliver the championship 100% of the time. In those cars the driver's identity stops mattering. It is the exact mirror of what we found measuring how much the car is worth: the more dominant the machine, the less it shows who is inside.

The other end, and a lovely surprise

Flip the table over and you get the seasons where having the best car guaranteed you the least.

Read that list again: 2012, 2010, 2007, 2021, 2003. One by one, they are the most fondly remembered seasons in modern Formula 1. 2012, with seven different winners in the first seven races. 2010, with four drivers alive going into Abu Dhabi. 2007, decided by a point between three. 2003, by two points. 2021, on the final lap of the year.

And this is what makes the exercise worth doing: the simulation knows none of that. It has read no race reports and has no idea which championships thrilled anyone. It only looked at how much margin the best car had and worked out how many races it would win. That this produces the list of legendary championships confirms something we all suspect: what makes a season memorable is not who wins, it is that the best car is not enough.

The dullest era is not the one you think

The Mercedes hybrid era (2014-2020) is comfortably the most lopsided of the last forty years: the best car won 72% of races and 95% of titles. Not even Ferrari's run with Schumacher got there.

At the other end, the V8 years between 2005 and 2009 come out as the most open: 54% of wins and only 63% of titles for the best car. Those were the years of Alonso, Räikkönen, Hamilton and Button sharing championships around.

The ground-effect rules, sold as the ones that would close the field up, land at 55% — better than the hybrids, but a long way from the promise. And the 90% of 2023 drags that average upwards on its own.

And something you can predict

The correlation between the best car's margin over the second and its share of wins is 0.80. That is very high. In plain terms: knowing only how much the leading car has over its nearest chaser, you can predict fairly well how dull the season will be, without knowing who is driving.

Applied to the present: the 2026 season has three cars within six rating points — something that has not happened in years — and in simulation the best of them wins only 15% of races. If those figures hold, it is on course to be the closest in the whole series. With the obvious caveat that it is an ongoing season and its ratings are provisional.

The limits

As always, worth saying what this does not measure. Each car's rating is a single number for the whole season, so it misses in-season development: a car that started badly and ended up flying counts as its average. The rivals on the grid are derived from a form index rather than a full profile. And there is no catastrophic one-off reliability, no penalties, no year of rotten luck.

What it does measure, with 2,220 simulated seasons behind it, is how much advantage each car conferred when the person inside was always the same. By that yardstick, the 2023 Red Bull is the most superior to its own era of anything since 1988.

If you want somewhere to start: take the 2016 Mercedes and put a mediocre driver in it. He is still champion. That is what 78% means.
