Historical context
Michael Schumacher in 2004 was possibly the most dominant driver in F1 history: 13 wins in 18 races with the Ferrari F2004. Lewis Hamilton in 2007 was the most impressive rookie in memory. This simulation pits two of the greatest drivers of all time against each other at their best.
The real 2004 season
The 2004 season was the last great roar of Ferrari's golden era and, by the numbers, second only to 2002 in terms of dominance. The F2004 was an almost perfect car, and Michael Schumacher wrung it dry until he shattered his own records. The German opened by winning twelve of the first thirteen races, a simply unreal streak, and posted thirteen wins across the eighteen rounds of the calendar. He secured the championship very early, at the Belgian Grand Prix, on the mythical Spa-Francorchamps circuit. It was his seventh world title and fifth in a row, a record that seemed destined to stand unbeaten for generations. No one imagined then that it would be his last crown, nor that the red dynasty was about to break.

The drivers
Lewis Hamilton is the most decorated driver in history in wins and poles, and equals Schumacher with seven world titles. Raised in Stevenage and backed by McLaren from childhood, he burst onto the scene in 2007 with such force that he came within a single point of the championship in his rookie year. He made amends in 2008, clinching his first title on the final corner of the last race in Brazil, snatching it from Felipe Massa metres from the line. Full profile →
Michael Schumacher redefined what it meant to be a professional Formula 1 driver. He debuted in 1991 with Jordan at Spa and left everyone stunned; barely a race later he was at Benetton. Full profile →
